"the wizard" is the sixth episode of the fourth season of Barry. It was written by Bill Hader, Alec Berg, and directed by Bill Hader.
Synopsis[]
Barry heads to LA to track down Cousineau. Fuches gets out of prison. Sally struggles to parent John.
Plot[]
Before heading to LA, Barry tries to get Sally to assemble a handgun for John's protection. Sally is hesitant in his plan to kill Gene, but Barry states it is their only plan to maintain their normal status, as he does not want Gene to tell his truth of the story.
Meanwhile, Fuches is finally released from prison with his crew. Fuches, now going solely by The Raven, heads to Hank's new base of sand based company, NoHoBal. In exchange for his silence regarding Hank's criminal activities, Fuches wants an expensive house and info on Barry's whereabouts. Hank has lost interest in pursuing Barry, believing that he is probably dead. Fuches, however, pressures Hank into finding him. Hank complies with Fuches' request in providing him a luxury house, for which Fuches' gang will serve as security for Hank's properties.
As this occurs, Barry drives around LA listening to podcast pastors in the hopes that one would condone sinning. Barry buys a gun at a local store and then listens to a pastor, Nick Saint Angelo who is the one to finally condone killing, giving Barry a clearer mind.
Gene and Tom meet to discuss Barry's biopic with Josie who describes it as a cat-and-mouse thriller where Gene stops Barry. Gene shuts down the idea, claiming that his time spent at a kibbutz in Israel made him change his perception of life, and deems their attempt at a biopic as exploitation. The executive states they will proceed with the biopic with or without his involvement, just as an officer takes Gene to meet with District Attorney Buckner. Buckner reprimands Gene for fleeing after shooting Leo, only to risk his safety by returning.
Gene visits Leo at his house, apologizing for shooting him. He mentions the biopic and how he plans to stall it, although Leo does not believe him. Unbeknownst to them, Barry has been staking out the house and prepares to enter, but stops himself when he sees Gene's grandson Gordon arrive home from school.
Back at their house, John refuses to eat anything, so Sally decides to give him alcohol, causing him to sleep on the couch. While taking a nap, she overhears Bevel yelling outside the house threatening her and John, then experiences an apparent hallucination where someone breaks into the house and threatens her and John's life, even managing to tremble the whole house with his car. Sally goes to the living room, finding that there is wreckage. That night, she calls Barry asking him to come back, while John listens in secret.
At the luxury house, a drunken Fuches delivers a toast with his gang, also revealing that he is now step-father through his girlfriend's daughter. Fuches praises Hank for his actions and success. However, Hank is incensed when Fuches points out he stole Cristobal's business idea. When Fuches doubles down on the claim and deems it as a compliment, Hank orders him and his gang to leave the house by next morning, ending their partnership.
Barry follows Gene back to his house, and upon noticing the door left open he takes out his gun and prepares to enter. Suddenly, a person places a masked hood over his head. He awakens to find himself tied to a chair, facing Jim Moss, seated across from him.
