- "Did you love my daughter? Why are you protecting Barry Berkman?"
- ―Jim Moss to Gene Cousineau
Jim Moss is a former U.S. Army soldier skilled in psychological warfare, and the father of Det. Janice Moss, who was murdered by hitman Barry Berkman. After he learned of this, Jim dedicated himself to bringing Barry to justice, working with the Los Angeles Police Department and Gene Cousineau to arrest him.
History[]
The Berkman case[]
Capture[]
Jim first appears when Monroe Fuches approaches him under his alias, private investigator "Kenneth Goulet" where he attempts to convince Moss that Barry had a part to play in his daughter, Janice's death. Jim, not believing him, drives Fuches to the police station where he is arrested. Jim is then informed of Gene Cousineau's claims of Barry being the culprit leading him to believe that Barry is in-fact the killer.
Jim soon meets with Gene Cousineau and brings him to his home where he begins to interrogate Gene about his connection to Barry after learning of Barry's crimes. Gene eventually admits enough to Jim that he goes to the police and stages a plot to capture Barry. Gene calls Barry and leads him to believe that Gene will kill Jim. Barry, fearing for Gene's innocence, goes to Jim's house and enters with the intent to kill Jim only to be surrounded by police officers while Jim drinks a glass of alcohol. Jim watches from his lawn as Barry is taken into custody.
Stopping the press[]
Following Barry's arrest, reporters came to both Moss and Cousineau but Jim was firm in not talking to them. After Cousineau gave a one man show to reporter Lon O'Neil, Jim grew angry with him. Lon came to Jim's door soon after and was tortured into silence.
Hunting Barry[]
Not long after his arrest, news broke that Barry had escaped prison and was on the run. He tracked down the Chechen's base of operations, believing Barry would go after them. However, after the police raided the location, it was found to not be their base anymore.
Eight years later[]
For eight years, Jim lived with the hatred of Barry still looming in the back of his mind.
Barry's return[]
When the news of a Barry Berkman biopic was in pre-production with Cousineau working as a consultant, Jim realized that Barry would return to stop Cousineau. Jim waited outside Gene's house and waited for Barry to come back. One night, Jim watched Barry approach the Cousineau home and kidnapped him.
Jim psychologically tortured Barry, making him experience losing his loved ones. During this, Barry revealed the duffle bag he gave to Gene before his arrest. Jim surprised, went to Lon's notes and connected the dots.
Jim went to District Attorney, Buckner and Gene's son, Leo Cousineau and set a trap for Gene. They suspected Gene had been lying, suggesting that he shot Leo after he discovered that Gene paid for his house using Chechen drug money. As Janice killed a Chechen and found drug money in Gene's class, they deduced that Gene was involved in the Chechen mafia's criminal activities and manipulated Barry into killing her at his cabin. This theory is also reinforced by the fact that he was found near her corpse with The Raven.
The case was re-opened the next day.
Personality[]
Jim is a cold and frightening man who has a deep love for his family. Jim's skills in psychological torture allow him to get the truth out of people easily and to his victims, appears as a haunting and terrifying figure.
