Barry Wiki

"These feelings that you're having right now, these are the paints in your acting toolbox. That's what this class is about... You know, getting to that, taking that apart, and... and dealing with it. It's called "being human", that's what acting is."
Sally Reed

"Chapter Two: Use It" is the second episode of Barry's first season, written by Alec Berg and Bill Hader, and directed by Hader. It first aired on HBO on April 1, 2018.

The episode was viewed by an estimated 641,000 households[1] and received critical acclaim, particularly for the performances, writing, and building momentum from the premiere.

Synopsis[]

Gene encourages his class to channel grief into artistic expression. Barry faces a dilemma.[2]

Plot summary[]

Barry practices mirror exercises with Sally when Gene walks in and tells the class Ryan Madison is dead. Gene tells Barry to "Use it," use his sorrow in his acting and then cancels class for the day. Meanwhile, LAPD Detective Janice Moss goes over photos of the Ryan Madison murder and notices her partner, Detective John Loach crying over his divorce in the crime scene photos. The police have found a lipstick camera in the BMW.

As they walkout of the acting studio, Sally plans a memorial for Ryan where the students will perform to honor Ryan's memory. Back at the LAPD, Moss gets the technicians to start finding what's in the camera and progress moves slowly. After Fuches texts Barry that the Chechens are coming to kill them, he meets a motivated Fuches who refuses to get out of town for his safety and unknowingly, so Barry can stay and pursue acting. He goes on the balcony to take Sally's call, and while she asks him to do a scene from Doubt with her, the Chechens break in and kidnap them.

Hanks lectures them while they're tried up in Goran's garage. Hank asks Barry about the lipstick camera, and Goran assigns him a new hit to take out Paco, an informant on the Bolivian stash house. After offering multiple names, he asks if Vacha, the brother of the Chechen assassin Barry killed, can do it. He only accepts the job when Vacha threatens Fuches' life and takes out one of his teeth. They hold Fuches hostage until the job is done.

Sally and Barry run lines in the bar closet. Even though Barry and Gene don't want to do the scene about child molestation, Sally insists. The acting students do emotional but inappropriate performances and Ryan's father comes to give a speech before Sally and Barry are supposed to go on. As his father mourns and he sees how his targets' deaths affects their family, Barry gets anxious and leaves the bar. Sally talks him into coming back into the bar without having to do the scene. They chat as they walk up to Sally's house, Sally tells him it's a bad idea to hook up and he agrees. Unbeknownst to them, Vacha is stalking them.
