"Chapter Three: Make the Unsafe Choice" is the third episode of Barry's first season, written by Duffy Boudreau and directed by Bill Hader. It first aired on HBO on April 8, 2018.
The episode was viewed by an estimated 595,000 households[1] and received positive reviews, primarily for its dark humor and character development.
Synopsis[]
Barry fulfills an obligation, and comforts Sally after an audition gone awry. The Chechens welcome a hitman legend.[2]
Plot summary[]
Barry reads Gene's book while he's set up to kill his hit, Paco. Hanks calls him and wants him to wait because he mailed a bullet to the Bolivians to send a message, and Barry has to oblige for Fuches' safety. Goran comes to tell Hank that Stovka, the legendary best Chechen assassin, is coming to LA.
Sally's agent tells her she has an audition while she's doing a princess birthday party gig. Barry gets frustrated with the easiness of the hit on Paco and goes to acting class instead of waiting. The Chechen takes photos with Stovka, withered old man and Goran tells him he has been tried to kill Barry and Fuches. Fuches talks to Stovka, who is solemn and depressed.
Detective Loach figures out that Goran's wife was having an affair with Ryan Madison, giving the police an answer to why the Chechens would kill Ryan, but not who would kill the Chechens. Dectective Moss determines they could've only been from the gym or the acting class. In the acting class, Barry struggles with visualizing a place to act in. While they try to connect with soup, Moss and Loach enter.
Back in the garage, Fuches cheerfully tries to talk up Stovka in hopes he is more reclutant to kill them. He asks how old he is and Stovka says 45, despite his old figure. Stovka expresses his depression and how his murderous career has ruined his life and he has no true freedom, and kills himself.
The acting class is interviewed by the detectives, to which Barry answers unconcerned. Sally mentions her audition to him and he takes her to it, while Gene unsuccessfully flirts with Detective Moss.
Goran is very upset about Stock's death. Fuches compliments his emotional openness and promotes keeping Barry in the Chechen mob so they can't be killed.
Sally runs lines with Barry while she waits. Barry tells her he'll wait for her. In the audition, Sally's old friend, Liz, from the cast of a failed show where Sally had a bigger part. Liz tells her she's the lead and she fought for Sally to get an audition. As she auditions, she gets flustered and starts crying.
Still tied up, Fuches has dinner and gives advice to Goran. He tells him to go after the Bolivians' assets, specifically their stash house. Goran tells Fuches the leader of the Bolivian mob is Cristobal Sifuentes, and he should hire Barry to kill him when he comes out after they take the stash house. Barry gets texts the bullet was delivered just as Sally comes back and breaks down in his arms, he has to leave to kill Paco.
Barry waits to take out Paco and misses his shot because he picks up a crying Sally's call. He decides to go into Paco's house so he can get the job done faster and see Sally, but it gets messy and he has to choke Paco to death. He drives to Sally's while she rants. Barry tells her he believes she'll be a star and she makes out with him. While they lie naked in bed, dreams of them going grocery shopping are interlaced with the memory of choking Paco. He repeats something he said "No tienes que hacer esto," and Sally tells him it means "You don't have to do this." Barry realizes he doesn't have to do this either.
