"bestest place on earth" is the second episode of the fourth season of Barry. It was written by Alec Berg, Bill Hader, & Nicky Hirschhorn and directed by Hader.
Synopsis[]
Barry gets an unexpected visitor. Hank and Cristobal attempt to restart their operations. Gene tells his story. Sally deals with the aftermath of having dated Barry.
Plot[]
In a flashback, a young Barry is introduced by his father, John, to one of his friends, Fuches. Back in present day, Fuches informs his officers that he will abandon the wiretapping operation, not wanting to incriminate Barry. Using his "Raven" status, Fuches fails to convince other inmates into joining a gang with Barry for protection.
Cristobal meets with a former associate, Bong, to recruit him and his criminal organization for their new business strategy. He reunites Bong's gang with their rival gang at a Dave & Buster's restaurant, intending to get them to cooperate. Hank, meanwhile, has kept in touch with a person known as "Toro", who can help him in breaking Barry out of prison, but will need henchmen. Cristobal convinces the gangs about their sand empire, but is taken aback when Hank explains he will need Barry for their plan.
Meanwhile, Lon O'Neil finds a note in his car left by Gene, who states he must follow certain instructions and routes for their meeting to avoid being followed. Lon arrives at Gene's location, which is the acting class. The "interview" turns out to be a dramatized re-enactment since he met Barry, with exaggerated claims.
Barry is surprised when Sally visits him in prison. Through code names, she asks him about the status of the attacker she killed, with Barry stating the situation is under control. She breaks down in tears, due to the events in her hometown and learning about Barry's real life. Barry laments the situation and wonders why she does not leave, to which she says she feels safer around him. When he asks her about the latter, she hangs up and leaves.
Sally meets with Lindsay, who explains she cannot be her agent anymore. She explains that the media has scrutinized Sally because of her association with Barry, despite Sally's claims that she is the victim. Lindsay says her only choices would be starring in a reality show or a podcast.
After constant daydreaming, Barry meets with FBI agents. He offers to give up the Chechens, Bolivians, as well as many other powerful criminal organizations, in exchange for protection for him and someone else.
Back at the theater, Gene finishes his performances, which included many lies to make himself look better, telling Lon that he will be the sole interviewer but that he must consider Cousineau an anonymous source. However, the event was witnessed by Sally, who confronts Gene for not warning her about Barry's hitman status. Gene convinces her that they were both victims and advises her that if she cannot get acting jobs, she can always teach.
At their house, Cristobal confronts Hank for bringing up Barry during their operation, claiming that Barry does not care for Hank. As Hank defends his decision, he is called by Fuches. Fuches has discovered that Barry cooperated with the FBI for special treatment, providing incriminating evidence against them. A disappointed Hank returns to Cristobal, telling him they must kill Barry.
